Andy Hughes is a photographer living on the North coast of Cornwall whose work explores the ocean, beach and environmental issues. He takes pictures of the garbage, refuse, and other detritus washed up on the shores on which he surfs. The remnants of a modern industrial consumerist society in relation to the natural world. His beautifully illustrated book Dominant Wave Theory is a collection of these pictures; the book is designed by experimental typographer David Carson, art diretor and creator of Ray Gun magazine whose ground breaking organic approach to typography and his rejection of traditional layout influenced a generation to come. For Andy Hughes’ exhibition at the Mariners Museum in Virgina, he asked me to compose some music for a stop frame film of his images that he was exhibiting there.
